Unbearable pressure of poverty, husband and wife commit suicide leaving behind two children

In Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, a husband and wife committed suicide together, leaving behind a son and a daughter. This heartbreaking incident took place on Sunday night in the Kurerpar area of Lalpur union in the upazila. The deceased are Al Amin (28), son of Nannu Mia of Kurerpar, and his wife Zarina Begum (23), daughter of Idris Mia of Noapara in the same union. Al Amin was an easy-bike driver by profession. Relatives said that the couple was suffering from mental stress due to long-standing poverty in the family, debt pressure, and marital discord.

Zarina's brother Anwar Hossain said, ‘Conflicts began between them ever since the easy-bike bought on installments was sold. On Sunday night, my sister first consumed pesticide. Then, when her death became certain, my brother-in-law also chose the same path.’ With the help of neighbors, they were taken to the Brahmanbaria 250-Bed Hospital around 10 pm, where Zarina died. Al Amin also died around 1 am. Lalpur UP local member Md. Shahjahan Mia said they heard about the incident through local people.

However, he could not say anything for certain about the main cause of the suicide. Neighbor Delwar Ahmed Akash said that no news of discord between the couple had been heard before. Al Amin sold the easy-bike due to personal debt, which created friction with his mother and wife. He said, ‘When Zarina first took the pills, Al Amin snatched them away. But seeing his wife's condition, he too consumed that medicine later.’ Ashuganj Police Station OC Mohammad Billal Hossain said, ‘The two bodies have been kept at the Sadar Hospital morgue.

Autopsy is underway, and legal procedures are also being followed.’ A shadow of grief has descended upon the entire area due to this tragic incident. The pathetic fate of this couple, who departed leaving behind two young children, has shaken the entire village.
