A father overwhelmed by debt: Mizan Gazi

A father overwhelmed by debt — Mizan Gazi. Bearing the responsibility of four children and a struggling life, he fought day after day. But in the end, he lost to life. This day-labourer committed suicide by drinking poison in Sahapur village of Faridganj upazila in Chandpur.

Mizan Gazi (50) is a resident of Gazi house in Paikpara South union of the upazila. Although a day-labourer by profession, he was forced to take on the burden of loans from multiple NGOs while trying to carry the weight of life. Struggling to pay regular installments, Mizan recently wanted to persuade his wife Kohinoor Begum to take a new loan. However, his wife did not agree to this thinking the burden of debt would increase further. This broke him down mentally. Unbeknownst to his family, he ingested poison. When family members noticed and quickly took him to the upazila health complex and Chandpur General Hospital, the doctor declared him dead. Upon receiving the news, Faridganj police station recovered the body on Tuesday night and sent it to Chandpur morgue for autopsy on Wednesday (2 July) morning.
